Traditional North-Eastern mat making methods were hooky, proggy (or proddy) and clippy methods. They all produce a unique textured result and a rug manufactured this way certainly adds to your home giving comfort and warmth to a room.

Aims of the course

To learn some historical facts about mat making
To explore ways of recycling old material
To develop a design for a mat and
To discover the process of proggy mat making giving life to those designs

What happens

We will explore regional history and stories of how proggy mats came into being.

At a visit to a local museum we will re-discover regional mat design in archives and develop our own mat designs.

Following the designing the participants will do hands-on mat making and in the process experience a sustainable way of dealing with their old unwanted jumpers.

Who can take part

The workshops serves as an introduction to mat making and are aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles as well as recycling and alternative ways of using you jumpers.

A rug is one of the first things we see when we enter a room.

Making a rug yourself gives you control over all the design element like size, shape, colour, pattern or texture.
