felting
Felt emerges from a nomadic past, bringing with it all the qualities which make it the material of this millenium.
Felt is probably one of the oldest textiles made by humankind. It accompanies us from from centuries before Christ and is likely to be even older. Many myths and legends surround felt and its history. So it is told that Joseph's coat of many colours was made of felt.
It has retained its true character for thousends of years. Its particular properties have made felt useful in many areas of life. It is used for making coats, hats, jackets, shoes and bags. Carpets and cushions are made of it, and one can even find felted curtains. It is suited as organic building material to build gers or to insulate houses. It is a way to shape thoughts and ideas and to decorate our lives.
Felt is a piece of living nature and the spell it casts enchants me. Each time I see a piece of felt I want to touch it and take it in with all my senses. It represents total comfort combined with beauty and elegance.
In order to get started I needed the willingness to discover its magic and some knowledge of wool. The great joy of felt making is its accessibility, the fact that it does need no special equipment or studio. Most of the things were easy to get or I already had them. The wool I ordered from Adelaide Walker who are very helpful and prompt.
Design ideas are literally limitless, in other words, the sky was and is my limit.
